I don’t know about you but one thing I REALLY love about marketing is that you get to play armchair psychologist.

Think about it…

In order to get people to buy from you, you have to know what motivates them, right?

Like, why do they want to buy something?

And why would they want to get it right now versus some other time?

You start pinpointing some of these things, like what makes them tick, and suddenly you’re able to sell ice in the arctic.

And honestly, it is fascinating to me.

Now, we could sit around and go back and forth for DAYS about all of the various human desires and behaviors that you could tap into to sell your stuff.

But, we don’t have days here.

And, I just so happened to catch something in the paper today, which had me thinking about all this on one specific trait.

First, check out this mugshot:

This looks like any ordinary woman, right?

She could literally be anyone’s neighbor.

And yet, she got arrested for possession of a firearm by a felon and 51 grams of illegally acquired pot.

And here’s the best part:

SHE was the informant that tipped off the police about her illegal activities!

How?

Because she was posting online bragging about her activities.

The local PD alleged that this woman, who is assigned to electronic monitoring for a separate case, had posted photos on social media of herself holding a handgun and a large amount of cannabis.

Now, your first reaction is probably, “WHHHHYYYYYY?????”

Right?

Like, why would someone give themselves away like this?

But you hear about this kind of thing all the time, don’t you?

Kids will rob a grocery store or a convenience store or even a bank and then post all about it on Social Media, alerting everyone to their activities.

Hell, I have even seen some where they’ve live-streamed the illegal stuff they were doing, as they were doing it.

On the one hand, it’s insane!!!

You’re just asking to be locked away.

But on the other hand, if you step back and think about it as a psychologist, there is a very real reason these people do this.

You see, it’s human nature that people need to feel validated by their peers.

So, these fine folks that are committing crimes and then posting it for the world to see, they’re at a core level just looking for validation.

Now, knowing this…

Knowing that people have such a strong urge to be validated that they will actually commit crimes and then gladly post those crimes for the world to see…

Do you think you could use that to your advantage as a marketer?

YES.

Yes, you could.

Off the top of my head, you could spin part of your marketing message to tap this human need by describing how your product or your service is going to make them the talk of the town… 

Or how people will envy them… 

Or how people will want to be them…

If you help them to understand that your stuff gets them the validation they desire, then the sky is the limit for you on sales my friend.

People will flock to you with credit cards in hand beating down your door to buy from you.

And, there’s plenty more where that came from.
